Full metal edges further enhance the appeal of the Voile Vector BC skis for anyone seeking to venture into the most technical and difficult backcountry regions. The Aspen wood core promotes lightweight, super strong construction with incredible response and maneuverability. Whether cruising the flats and rollers, or ascending to drop into the next powder stash, the Voile Vestor BC skis deliver reliability and high performance. These backcountry touring, telemark waxless skis pair well with Voile ski bindings and plastic shell style backcountry ski boots such as the Scarpa T4 boots and the Garmont Excursion boots. This is a ski that must be considered when selecting the ideal ski hard charging fun in the snowy backcountry.

Fischer S-Bound 88 Backcountry Touring Skis

fischer-s-bound-88-cross-country-skis

Image of the 2012 Fischer S-Bound 88 cross country skis / backcountry touring skis. Available in 159cm, 169cm, 179cm and 189cm lengths.

Already a popular choice with many backcountry touring skiers, the Fischer S-Bound Series of serious backcountry touring skis (including the Fischer S-Bound 112 and Fischer S-Bound 98 models) now has a slimmer, more universally versatile brother — the new 2012 Fischer S-Bound 88 skis. The purpose of this new option is to perfect an optimal balance between pleasure cruising touring along snow covered fields, forest covered valley floors & rolling hills along with more extreme back country touring that includes steep vertical going up and coming down (think earning your turns mentality, climbing to gain access to the choicest powder gems to unleash the telemark skis side of the S-Bound 88), challenging traverses and varied snow and ice conditions. The Fischer S-Bound 88 skis blend a long list of featured ingredients to achieve this versatility. Features include full metal edges, propietary Nordic Rocker technology, integrated snow shock absorbsion technology, air-channel wood core and the exclusive Fischer Skis OffTrack Crown Waxless Pattern for premium waxless skis performance.

Fischer S-Bound 98 Backcountry Touring Skis

by Snow Dawg on January 28, 2011

fischer-s-bound-98-skis-telemark-backcountry-touring-nordic-skiis

Photo of the Fischer S-Bound 98 skis, the skinnier brother of the S-Bound 112 model, another one of the newest Fischer Skis offerings in the nordic backcountry touring skis category and now available at ORS Cross Country Skis Direct.

Meet the slightly skinnier brother of the Fischer S-Bound 112 backcountry-telemark skis… introducing the all-new Fischer S-Bound 98 nordic backcountry touring skis. And just like the S-Bound 112, the Fischer 98 S-Bound skis feature the revolutionary new rocker engineering, an industry first in pure backcountry touring ski technology. What is rocker engineering you ask? Well unlike traditional pure telemark-back country ski cambers that flatten out when pressure is applied, the tips of the Fischer S-Bound 98 skis elevate and rock upward when pressure is applied. This allows the snow contact point of the skis to be located much further back. Effectively improving flotation in untracked, deep snow when kick & glide striding in back country touring mode, as well as phenomenal stability and control when carving out turns on the descents. The 112mm tip – 78mm waist – 95mm tail sidecut, full metal edges and Fischer Skis proprietary OffTrack Pattern waxless skis technology all work to define the Fischer S-Bound 98 skis as all-around, universal backcountry touring cross country skis. They are equally at home skiing hut to hut, exploring uncharted winter routes behind the house or taking on any steep and challenging terrain (superior grip and control on the uphills and unrivalled glide and stability for non-stop thrills on the downhills). Whether in ice and crud or fresh fluff and stuff, you can count on the Fischer S-Bound 98 skis to deliver.

Fischer S-Bound 112 Backcountry – Telemark Skis

fischer-s-bound-112-skis-waxless-backcountry-touring-telemark-skiis

Picture of the Fischer S-Bound 112 skis, the newest Fischer Skis offering in the backcountry touring / telemark skis category.

Now available from Fischer Skis are the all-new Fischer S-Bound 112 backcountry-telemark skis. Boasting an industry first in pure backcountry touring ski technology, the Fischer S-Bound 112 skis feature rocker engineering.  Unlike traditional fat backcountry ski cambers that flatten out when pressure is applied, the  Fischer S-Bound 112 ski tips rock upward and elevate when pressure is applied, enabling the snow contact point to reside much further back on the ski. The result is much improved stability, exceptional flotation and superior downhill turns in deep snow.  Designed with an aggressive sidecut (sidecut 112mm tip – 78mm waist – 95mm tail), full metal edges and Fischer Skis proprietary OffTrack Pattern waxless skis technology. Very responsive and aggressive feel and maneuvers very efficiently in tightly wooded areas and variable terrain and extreme traverses. If your idea of backcountry fun is endless downhill thrills in everything from fresh powder and deep fluff to ice and crud, with only kick and glide back country touring and skinning up the steepest ascents to access these remote, hidden gems then the Fischer S-Bound 112 skis are definitely the choice for you.

A fun picture contributed by T.Moore, a customer of ORS Cross Country Skis Direct, geared up with the Rossignol BC 90 backcountry touring skis-telemark skis and the Rottefella BC Magnum NNN ski bindings mounted to the skis. He is also using the Black Diamond Traverse ski poles. He says he lives just 40 miles from Kennedy Meadows, California where he has access to all kinds of back country ski touring. Additionally, with the Sierra Nevada mountains nearby he says there are endless possibilities to use his equipment. The Rossignol BC90 skis, with there wide platform, waxless skis bases and full metal edges, are the ideal tool for exploring all kinds of terrain and variable snow conditions found in the remote winter back country. The Rottefella BC Magnum bindings also provide superior stability and control, while also allowing for efficient kick and glide striding when in touring mode. And, of course, the Black Diamond Traverse ski poles are by far the most popular choice for backcountry touring / telemark ski poles. On a funny side note, T. Moore says he ponied up for a real pair of ski pants after this photo was taken.

Recently contributed ORS Cross Country Skis Direct customer pictures featuring Beth D. and her friends nordic skiing in the Laurel Mountains of Pennsylvania. For equipment she is using the Rossignol BC 65 Positrack nordic skis with Rottefella BC Auto NNN ski bindings. With metal edges, sufficiently wide platform and waxless ski bases, the BC65 skis are a great all-around backcountry touring choice that deliver plenty of maneuverability, control and stability in a variety of snow conditions and terrain. Yet, the skis are narrow enough to still fit in groomed xc ski tracks if you ever want to jump in some tracks and do some nordic touring kicking and gliding. The Rottefella NNN BC Auto ski bindings are compatible with any BC NNN ski boots, and the bindings also offer additional stability and control on the downhills, tricky traverses etc.

How To Apply Swix Easy Glide for Waxless Skis

by Snow Dawg on January 7, 2011

YouTube Preview Image

ORS Cross Country Skis Direct has produced this quick and informative presentation video that shows how to apply Swix Easy Glide to waxless skis. Swix Easy Glide is an excellent application for the bases of any waxless cross country skis, backcountry skis and more, as it prevents any possible ice build up or snow from sticking to the bottom of the skis. However, it also allows the skis to continue to effectively grip the snow when kick and gliding, climnbing hills etc. And of course it ensures a great glide on the downhills too. While virtually maintenance free, waxless skis still require a modest amount of upkeep. The best process is to use Swix base cleaner on a fiberline towel to remove the Swix Easy Glide when you are finished skiing. The base cleaner also removes any dirt and debris from the ski bases. Then simply reapply the Swix Easy Glide when you are ready to go skiing again. The Swix Easy Glide Care kit includes the Swix Easy Glide, Base Cleaner and Fiberline Towels and is an excellent handy kit to have on hand before heading out to ski and when you are finished.

marquette-backcountry-skis

Picture of the Marquette backcountry skis, the most exciting new revelation of the year for backcountry ski touring of all styles. The Marquette Skis company describes them as 30% snowshoes, 70% skis and 100% fun!

Perhaps the most exciting new sensation to hit the backcountry skis touring scene for the 2011 winter season, the all-new Marquette Backcountry skis are without a doubt hot, hot, hot! The uniquely innovative design will immediately grab your attention — a super fat width (sidecut is 150mm tip – 130mm waist – 140mm tail) and a short 140 cm length are combined with an early rising front end. All this results in what the Marquette Skis company has dubbed 30% snowshoes, 70% skis and 100% fun. Indeed, after much testing, there isn’t much the Marquette backcountry skis aren’t capable of. Superb flotation in deep snow when touring and climbing hills and mountains, excellent grip with shuffling, kicking & gliding and climbing, and absolutely spectacular handling in all terrain, conditions and situations encountered in the backcountry. Pair the Marquette skis up with any 75mm 3pin backcountry touring ski binding or telemark ski bindings, along with any backcountry touring or telemark ski boots. In fact, ORS Cross Country Skis Direct is currently offering the Marquette skis package that also includes Fischer BCX 675 ski boots, Voile 3-pin 75mm cable bindings and Black Diamond Traverse ski poles.

Lucky Bum & Madshus Snow Pup Kid Skis Video

by Snow Dawg on December 15, 2010

YouTube Preview Image

Another great ORS Cross Country Skis Direct video, this time featuring the Madshus SnowPup kid skis and the Lucky Bum skis for kids. Both are great choices for any small children experiencing cross country skiing for the first time. They are also inexpensive options,  so you don’t need to invest heavily just to find out the kids don’t like to ski (though we’ve never seen a child do this!!!) The bindings on the Lucky Bums child skis and the Madshus Snow Pup skis are pre-mounted and allow the heal to lift, while the toe area stays fixed. This makes it easy for kids to maneuver around and also get going shuffling and kick and glide striding. The heel cup also provides fantastic support for controlled stability on the downhills. No need to use specific kid’s nordic ski boots either, just use your child’s normal snow boots or other winter footwear. The Madshus Snow Pup skis and the Lucky Bums skis are both waxless skis with fischscale pattern so the kids get great grip on the uphills and when kick and glide striding. No maintenance or waxing required!

More from our Madshus Skis mini-series, this time featuring the 2010 / 2011 Madshus Epoch skis. These true all-around backcountry skis are the reincarnated Karhu XCD 10th Mountain skis, which are no longer made by Karhu Skis (K2 Skis owns both Madshus Skis and Karhu Skis and decided to now produce these skis under the Madshus brand.) Yep, the Madshus Epoch skis are exactly the same as the uber-cool Karhu 10th Mountain backcountry skis except for a different topsheet (graphics on the top of the skis). The Epoch is outfitted with the same materials, construction, waxless skis base and 99mm tip – 68mm waist – 84mm tail side cut.
