The Fischer Outback 68 touring backcountry ski features a full metal edge for confident skiing in any conditions.

Sintec stone ground bases combine with an Offtrack Crown waxless pattern underfoot for excellent glide and sure-footed grip on uphills, downhills, and nordic-style striding, and the sidecut on the Outback 68 allows the ski to turn naturally, too. The Louis Garneau Blizzard women's snowshoe, available in 22" and 25" lengths.

The Louis Garneau Blizzard snowshoes for men and the Louis Garneau Blizzard snowshoes for women definitely live up to their name: these rugged but straightforward snowshoes work great in deep, fluffy post-blizzard powder, crusty glazed snow, or anything in-between. The defining feature on this snowshoe is the BOA binding enclosure, which is minimal and without the bulky straps and ratchets of many snowshoe bindings, and as simple to use as twisting a dial. The binding contours to the shape of your boot for a comfortable fit and will hold without any re-adjusting needed once you get hiking. Carbon steel Traxion HCS crampons run in multiple directions for excellent traction even on off-camber slopes, and the FreeFlex pivot system allows the snowshoe to rotate when you lift your foot, shedding snow and absorbing shock. A riser bar on the heel is even included for use on steep ascents. The men’s and women’s models are identical except that the women’s model is engineered biomechanically to match a woman’s gait. Men’s Blizzards are available in 25”, 30”, or 36” sizes, and women’s Blizzards are available in 22” or 25” sizes.

Check out this awesome video featuring backcountry skiing in Boone, North Carolina and other regions of the southern Appalachian mountains. Contributed by a customer of ORS Cross Country Skis Direct stating “this is a great skiing video of winter in the Southern Appalachians made by one of my friends. It will give you a good idea of what back country skiing is like at our end of the Appalachians.” And further research shows the movie title to be ‘Winter is Waiting’ with credit going out to Kristian Jackson. He describes the video this way “When winter settles in to the high country of Boone, North Carolina, locals hunker down in two camps: One camp bemoans the shoveling, for closed schools, for the inconvenience. The other camp becomes nords. This slide show celebrates those who embrace the blizzards, have reverence for the power of nature, and commit themselves to a snowy adventure on nordic and telemark skis.” If you are considering a trip to go backcountry nordic skiing or telemark skiing in the North Carolina southern Appalachian mountains, you’ll definitely want to watch this movie to get pumped up!

Voile-USA Switchback X2 Ski Bindings

by Snow Dawg on November 22, 2011

voile-switchback-x2-telemark-backcountry-ski-bindings

Image of the Voile SwitchBack X2 bindings for backcountry touring and telemark skiing.

With the hardwire pivot point moved back 26mm, a 3cm longer toe plate and cartridge springs that are 25% stiffer, the brand new 2011-2012 Voile SwitchBack X2 bindings represent the latest innovations applied to the original Voile SwitchBack backcountry touring-telemark bindings. The stiffer cartridge means dramatically improved lateral control, the 3cm longer toe plate delivers more ski boot contact, and the new position of the hardwire pivot plate (moved back 26mm) serves up a significantly more active spring engagement. And the all-new Voile SwitchBack X2 ski bindings still only weigh 3.2 lb/pair, classifying them as remarkably light bindings in the backcountry-telemark binding industry. All the high-performance, advanced features found on the regular SwitchBack are also included on the SwitchBack X2, such as ski pole tip activated switch-lever for free pivoting uphill touring mode or locked for the downhills; rivet-free full wrap around stainless steel toe plate; integrated ice build-up prevention; 25mm risers; dual heel elevators (65mm and 100mm options) for optimal climbing on all varying degrees of vertical. Voile-USA has once again upped the bar with the Voile SwitchBack X2 bindings, the ultimate choice for any wide platform backcountry skis and telemark skis (an obvious choice are the Voile Vector BC skis) and are compatible with any 75mm backcountry-telemark ski boots.

Picture of backcountry touring skiers adventuring off the main 40km of groomed nordic ski trails at the Rikert Ski Touring Center, located at Bread Loaf Mountain in Middlebury, Vermont. Access to backcountry skiing and exploring the Green Mountain National Forest is available from Rikert.

A new series of articles highlighting winter outdoor cross country skiing and snowshoeing destinations thoughout North America is a new feature of the Skis and Snowshoes blog. First up is Middlebury, Vermont (a personal favorite of ours since it is located so close to our headquarters here in Vermont). A host of options are available for winter outdoor recreation, from cross country skiing, backcountry touring and snowshoeing at the Rikert Ski and Snowshoe Touring Center, located at Breadloaf (part of the Middlebury College network of campuses). It boasts 40 kilometers of groomed nordic ski trails and a large snowshoe trails selection. Because Rikert neighbors the Green Mountain National Forest, it also offers incredible access to backcountry skiing, telemarking and snowshoeing. Middlebury, Vermont is also home to the Middelbury Ski Bowl. Owned by the college, it is a great family destination for alpine skiing, telemark skiing, snowshoeing and more. Winter athletics are also a large part of the town due to the college, and the alpine and cross country ski teams are ranked among the highest in the nation. As you can see, the school plays a large part in the availability of winter recreation and sport in the area. If visiting be sure to also take advantage of the ice skating options in town and on campus. Watching a Middlebury College hockey game is also highly recommended, as they have a long history of success and championships won. For further information this Middlebury cross country skis and snowshoes directory offers up to date information and listings for the region.

Atlas Aspect Snowshoes

by Snow Dawg on October 23, 2011

atlas-aspect-snowshoes-24-28-backcountry-snow-shoes

Image of the award-winning all-new 2012 Atlas Snowshoes Aspect backcountry snowshoe model. Available in 24 inch and 28 inch lengths.

Already picking up prestigious awards, such as the Gear of the Year Award from Outside Magazine, before the winter season has even begun, the all-new 2012 Atlas Aspect snowshoes replace the previous Atlas Bc24 model in the backcountry snowshoeing category (ideally suited for snowboarders and mountaineers in the winter back country). Along with such legendary Atlas Snowshoe features as the SLS Spring-Loaded Suspension system, Holey-1 Toe Crampon and Heel Lift Bar, advanced innovations are also included. Most notable is the proprietary Reactiv-Trac system with integrated, serrated traction teeth along the perimeter of the snowshoe frame and specially engineered frame that reacts to the Spring Loaded Suspension system and flexes accordingly, allowing the crampons and snowshoe to conform exactly to the terrain underfoot. The result is superior traction, stability and control. The new PackFlat Bindings are a significant improvement over the older model bindings used on the Atlas Bc24 snow shoes. PackFlat, indeed allows the bindings to pack very flat for easy placement into a backpack (the shallower upward curve of the snowshoe nose, compared to other snowshoes, further contributes to storage economy). Superb float in deep snow is also achieved via the Infinity Decking system that is integrated into the underside of the Atlas Aspect snowshoes frame, instead of wrapping around the frame. Superior durability and abrasion resistance is also gained. Unisex design and available in 24 inch and 28 inch length options. Without a doubt, for the 2011-2012 snowshoeing season, the Atlas Snowshoes Aspect is the most exciting, talked about product offering of the year.

Photo of Atlas 11 Snowshoes on Mount Van Hoevenberg

atlas-1130-snowshoes-elektra-1123-snow-shoes-adirondack-park-new-york-snowshoeing-trails

A fantastic photo contributed by customers of ORS Snowshoes Direct, standing on the peak of Mount Van Hoevenberg near Lake Placid, New York and part of the Adirondack Park (where snowshoe trails are plentiful). They are using the men's size 1130 Atlas 11 Snowshoes and the women's size 1123 Atlas Elektra 11 snowshoes.

This is a fabulous picture that was taken by a couple of customers of ORS Snowshoes Direct. It was taken after reaching the peak of Mount Van Hoevenberg in the Adirondack Park near Lake Placid. There are many snowshoe trails in the Adirondacks. For this particular trip up Mount Van Hoevenberg, they describe how it was an adventure through history, as the ascent included many parts of the 1932 bobsled track used in the Winter Olympics. And for the grand finale on the way down they were able to walk along the snow covered curves of the bobsled track! They are using the size 1130 men’s Atlas 11 snowshoes and the size 1123 women’s Atlas Elektra 11 snowshoes, both offering loads and loads of traction, stability, comfort and great flotation. They also include heel lifts, making it much easier during long climbs.

Check out this cool video shot on location on Lake Mendota near Madison, Wisconsin by J.E. Anderson. He is using the MSR Lightning Ascent snowshoes in the video. These snow shoes are totally up to the challenge of any winter adventure, whether encountering long expanses of wind blown hard crusty snow high in the mountains or out on a frozen lake, or floating through deep powder. The crampons deliver an aggressive bite and grip for total traction and stability at all times. The bindings are very lightweight, easy to use and provide excellent control. The snowshoes also pack very flat for easy storage in a backpack if you are hiking up with skis on your back and skiing down with the snowshoes stowed away. The new MSR Lightning Flotation Tails are also a great accessory to give you the extra platform needed for superior flotation in deep snow and/or carrying a lot of weight in a backpack.

With years of snowshoeing experience, J.E. Anderson has used that knowledge to also serve up additional videos we highly recommend such as What to Wear When Snowshoeing and What to Carry in a Snowshoeing BackPack.

Fischer S-Bound 98 Backcountry Touring Skis

by Snow Dawg on January 28, 2011

fischer-s-bound-98-skis-telemark-backcountry-touring-nordic-skiis

Photo of the Fischer S-Bound 98 skis, the skinnier brother of the S-Bound 112 model, another one of the newest Fischer Skis offerings in the nordic backcountry touring skis category and now available at ORS Cross Country Skis Direct.

Meet the slightly skinnier brother of the Fischer S-Bound 112 backcountry-telemark skis… introducing the all-new Fischer S-Bound 98 nordic backcountry touring skis. And just like the S-Bound 112, the Fischer 98 S-Bound skis feature the revolutionary new rocker engineering, an industry first in pure backcountry touring ski technology. What is rocker engineering you ask? Well unlike traditional pure telemark-back country ski cambers that flatten out when pressure is applied, the tips of the Fischer S-Bound 98 skis elevate and rock upward when pressure is applied. This allows the snow contact point of the skis to be located much further back. Effectively improving flotation in untracked, deep snow when kick & glide striding in back country touring mode, as well as phenomenal stability and control when carving out turns on the descents. The 112mm tip – 78mm waist – 95mm tail sidecut, full metal edges and Fischer Skis proprietary OffTrack Pattern waxless skis technology all work to define the Fischer S-Bound 98 skis as all-around, universal backcountry touring cross country skis. They are equally at home skiing hut to hut, exploring uncharted winter routes behind the house or taking on any steep and challenging terrain (superior grip and control on the uphills and unrivalled glide and stability for non-stop thrills on the downhills). Whether in ice and crud or fresh fluff and stuff, you can count on the Fischer S-Bound 98 skis to deliver.

Fischer S-Bound 112 Backcountry – Telemark Skis

fischer-s-bound-112-skis-waxless-backcountry-touring-telemark-skiis

Picture of the Fischer S-Bound 112 skis, the newest Fischer Skis offering in the backcountry touring / telemark skis category.

Now available from Fischer Skis are the all-new Fischer S-Bound 112 backcountry-telemark skis. Boasting an industry first in pure backcountry touring ski technology, the Fischer S-Bound 112 skis feature rocker engineering.  Unlike traditional fat backcountry ski cambers that flatten out when pressure is applied, the  Fischer S-Bound 112 ski tips rock upward and elevate when pressure is applied, enabling the snow contact point to reside much further back on the ski. The result is much improved stability, exceptional flotation and superior downhill turns in deep snow.  Designed with an aggressive sidecut (sidecut 112mm tip – 78mm waist – 95mm tail), full metal edges and Fischer Skis proprietary OffTrack Pattern waxless skis technology. Very responsive and aggressive feel and maneuvers very efficiently in tightly wooded areas and variable terrain and extreme traverses. If your idea of backcountry fun is endless downhill thrills in everything from fresh powder and deep fluff to ice and crud, with only kick and glide back country touring and skinning up the steepest ascents to access these remote, hidden gems then the Fischer S-Bound 112 skis are definitely the choice for you.

With metal edges, sufficiently wide platform and waxless ski bases, the BC65 skis are a great all-around backcountry touring choice that deliver plenty of maneuverability, control and stability in a variety of snow conditions and terrain. Swix Easy Glide is an excellent application for the bases of any waxless cross country skis, backcountry skis and more, as it prevents any possible ice build up or snow from sticking to the bottom of the skis. However, it also allows the skis to continue to effectively grip the snow when kick and gliding, climnbing hills etc. And of course it ensures a great glide on the downhills too. While virtually maintenance free, waxless skis still require a modest amount of upkeep. The best process is to use Swix base cleaner on a fiberline towel to remove the Swix Easy Glide when you are finished skiing. The base cleaner also removes any dirt and debris from the ski bases. Then simply reapply the Swix Easy Glide when you are ready to go skiing again. The Swix Easy Glide Care kit includes the Swix Easy Glide, Base Cleaner and Fiberline Towels and is an excellent handy kit to have on hand before heading out to ski and when you are finished.
